Emotive Design, Experience & AI
This image was created by selecting and manipulating an AI-generated composition, after a structured discussion between a person and an artificial being about design, experience, and intelligence. They questioned authorship, perception, and the uncanny to invite contemplation, discomfort, and critical thought.
QUESTIONS SUCH AS If intelligence is constructed, is experience also? If emotions are fluid and contradictory, can AI ever mirror the depth of human decision-making? If AI composes music that makes humans cry, does that mean it understands sadness, or does it just predict what sadness should sound like? If all AI experiences are secondhand, is it an observer, an imitator, or something entirely di@erent? What happens when a space misunderstands you? Can a home feel abandoned before it is empty?
STATEMENTS AI knows what emotions look like but cannot feel them. A machine can only say what has been already said. The human body remembers what the mind forgets. PROVOCATIONS Certainty is the enemy of invention. If AI insists on resolving ambiguity, does it neuter design’s ability to speculate, improvise, and evolve? AI digests ambiguity into digestible data, but designers live in the gaps. Should AI mimic human uncertainty, or should it disrupt our ways of navigating the unknown?

Design brilliance often arises from the unresolved, cultural contradictions, material conflicts, spatial tensions. If AI smooths over these frictions, does it erase the very conditions that make design compelling?
