The Finnish Association of Interior Architects SIO has chosen the 2025 Interior Architecture Agency of the Year. The nomination goes to the Helsinki-based agency Kohina. Kohina is a strategic architecture and design agency founded in 2007 by Susanna Kallio. The agency supports sustainable development through the means of human-centred architecture and spatial design. The agency employs eight people.
In 2024, Kohina took significant steps towards sustainability and started to offer its customers carbon footprint calculations as part of its design services. Its goal is to help its customers understand and reduce the environmental impacts of their projects. The agency’s recently implemented projects include: Docrates Cancer Centre, Food Port REDI (Redi Mall’s Food Port restaurant hall), Skidi Port children’s area (Redi Mall), Studio Frö, Fööri Keilaniemi, Destia’s and Tampereen Energia’s premises. Furthermore, the agency has itself set an example by implementing carbon footprint reduction in its own operations.
The jury praises the winner for the variety, character and quality of its projects and its ability to listen to its clients which is also reflected in its work. The jury also commends the agency for its holistic approach and especially the skilful use of light and colour and materiality.
Sustainability is at the heart of the agency’s design practices. The spirit of the spaces designed by Kohina is well in line with the design objectives. The lighting and acoustics expertise is professional and effective.
This year, the decision based on proposals and applications was made by the representative of the 2023 Interior Architecture Agency of the Year, Futudesign, and Chairperson of the Jury Anni Ojanen (Interior Architect SIO), Chairperson of SIO Lars Räihä (Interior Architect SIO), Emma Johansson (Architect SAFA) as well as CEO Kaarina Gould, Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design. SIO Secretary General, Minna Borg, acted as the secretary of the jury.
